The term Web 2.0 was coined in the fall of 2001 after the dot com bubble burst to communicate that the Internet stock crash was not synonymous with the Web "crashing" and that the Web remained important and would continue to evolve in vital ways. For a few years the term got a small amount of play but as with other jargon (e.g., semantic web, folksonomy) it wasn't clear if it was going to stick or how much relevance the concept would have. 2005 saw use of the term gain strength, particularly as new terms like AJAX were coined that enabled the community to articulate evolving ways of achieving sophisticated web design by cobbling together a variety of existing technologies/capabilities in new ways.
Samantha Bailey the Director of Usability at Westlaw will discuss and attempt to define what various pundits mean when they talk about Web 2.0 as well as to evaluate what Web 2.0 may mean for usability professionals.
