Located at our corporate office in Eagan, MN, this position provides an opportunity to shape the user interface of online legal products in a global marketplace. Thomson Reuters' Online Services clients include business units across the globe. 
 
The User Experience Engineer is a member of the Online Services organization and conducts end user research for the purpose of improving the ease of use and satisfaction for users of Thomson Reuters' online products. This position works closely with business analysts, product owners and project managers to ensure a user centered approach is followed in the design and development of new products and features.

 

The ideal candidate should possess a passion for the needs of end users and user centered design while working in a global context. This person will conduct user research studies using a broad range of methodologies (lab studies, field work, cognitive walkthroughs, heuristic evaluations, etc.), make design recommendations to product owners and developers and follow an iterative design process with internal stakeholders. In addition, the individual must have the ability to foucs on customers' needs; knowledge of interaction design and user-centered design principles, familiarity with industry standards for interface design and user testing methodologies and working knowledge of design tools for prototyping. This position has a focus in one of the following specialties: information architecture, visual design, interaction design, or usability research but also contributes to the team as a generalist.

 

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

 

• Implement end-user research initiatives for new online products and features (e.g. designing interactive prototypes and executing usability testing). (70%)
• Assist Thomson Reuters business units in gathering, defining and documenting end-user requirements and design estimates for new online products and enhancements to online products. (20%)
• Raise awareness of user experience research and engineering and contribute to the development of a community of practice within the organization. (10%)

RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:

• Responsible for leading design meetings with virtual product teams and collaborating with multiple stakeholders for features, functionality and design of products.

Education

• Four-year undergraduate degree required.  Advanced degree or degree relevant to information design, human computer interaction, technical communication or design preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

Required:

• Demonstrated experience in performing field research, task analyses, formal UI reviews, usability tests and surveys.
• Demonstrated experience in translating end-user needs & technical requirements into interaction design concepts via wireframes and prototypes.
• Expertise in user-centered design techniques and UI design standards.
• Strong interpersonal, oral (including presentation), and written communication skills.
• Ability to work well with cross-functional, cross-departmental teams to accomplish objectives. 
• Ability to be self-directed and to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to understand, leverage and apply technology in product development.  Interest in new web-based technologies.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and to a lesser degree MS Project.
• Ability to travel internationally.

Preferred:

• Market-oriented understanding of technology utilization, readiness and rates of adoption in the legal marketplace.
• International/worldwide research experience.
• Knowledge of current professional products within Thomson Reuters.
• Knowledge of one or more non-English languages.  

Previous Experience

• 3-5 years total experience related to user experience engineering or user centered design required.
• Experience to include:  1) 1+ years experience in usability testing or user experience engineering; 2) Minimum of 2 years experience with the design, sales, support or use of electronic information applications.
