Brock Dubbels will present on the importance of play in sustaining engagement with your software, and building a loyal community of users.

Two case studies will be presented on serious games research, for training certified nursing assistants for a regional health care provider, and for the use of games for children's learning. The first case study will provide insights into model building for requirements, and the second will provide an example of empirical data, which can provide for ROI analysis.

In this talk, methods will be presented for conducting contextual inquiry, development based upon data-informed models,  the use of emulation for potential workflows. Now more than ever, it is essential to go beyond “how” and “what” of usability, and understand the “why” provided by user experience research.

Brock Dubbels currently conducts psychological research at McMaster University. He has worked as a Fulbright Scholar at the Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology, at Xerox PARC and Oracle, and as a research associate at the Center for Cognitive Science at the University of Minnesota. His specialties include user research, user experience, and software project management. He teaches course work on games and cognition, and how learning research can improve game design for return on investment (ROI). He is also the founder and principal learning architect at Learning Solutions and posts at www.vgalt.com for design, production, usability assessment and evaluation of learning systems and games. He consults and offers contract UX and UR. He is currently the Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Games and Computer Mediated Simulations.
